this is sth that's been on my mind lately. im sure we're all aware of the general public's perception of ai at this point, so im not gonna repeat myself. im just very frustrated with the way ppl form strong opinions for things they dont fully understand. a non-trivial proportion of ppl dont even do that; they merely adopt what theyve heard repeatedly from others. im rly sick of this.

i want to understand where it all came from, and how it will affect the adoption of the technology. will ppl continue to heavily push against it? will politicians succumb to the public pressure? what can be done about it?

My sense is that a lot of the public unease is a new flavor of the "the markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent" sentiment.

That is, "Even if I believe that eventually AI will do powerful and good things for society, those things will happen over a longer time horizon, but it might also make me lose my job this year, which will hurt me on the shorter time horizon"

that makes a lot of sense, the general form of this sentiment (x is bad because it will harm be in the short run even though it is beneficial in the long run) actually spreads to a lot of other issues.

do you think the whole objections around data centers/water usage is just downstream of that sentiment?

i think it's sad that the term that's being used to describe all evil is "ai", that's almost wayy too general lol
